Abstract: 

In the beech forest on limestone (mull) studied, there is a marked increase in the abundance of Collembola, Protura, and Diplura in the area around beech trees. Thesoil close to the trunks of the beech trees is strongly acidified (pH H20 < 4) by the high input of protones via stemflowwater. This area has been used as a typical example of the impact of airborne pollutants, such as protones, heavy metals etc., on the microarthropods of forest soils. It could be dernonstrated that differences in soil acidity on the different sides of the trees are correlated with the distribution of Apterygota. Collembola and Protura reached highest densities in the most acid soil, while Dipluraonly ocurred in the soil with the higher pH-value. As indicated by the quality of the organic layer and by the cornposition of the soilfauna, the soil-conditions in the area around the trunks come close to the conditions in a moder soil. With respect to the species-specific reaction of Collembola, the hypothesis wasdeveloped that the long-terrn input of acid rain (and the factors normally connected with acid rain) to base-rich soils may favor epedaphic species. In certain microhabitats, these species could indicate, and probably promote, the disintegration of the litter layer and the mineral soil - a process usually connected with soil acidification.
