Abstract

The structure of the clean Cu3Au(110)-(4 × 1) surface has been determined using quantitative LEED. It turned out that in the first layer, Cu and Au rows along the [001] direction pair up to build the (4 × 1) periodicity. The second layer contains at least 25%, Au so that the surface region is Au-enriched. The resulting structure can be regarded as a monatomic-thick Au wire embedded in a Cu matrix.
