Abstract

The bending mode vibration (frustrated translation) of CO adsorbed on Ru(001) was investigated using low-energy electron-diffraction (LEED). The concepts of split positions and anisotropic Debye-Waller factors are compared, and both methods are used in order to take the enhanced motion of C and O parallel to the surface properly into account. The temperature dependence of the carbon and oxygen mean-square deviations is consistent with a bending mode of the CO molecule with excitation energy of 5 ± 1 meV.
