After the blooming of fullerene and carbon nanotube chemistry, various
Abstract:
forms of nanodiamonds (NDs) represent the most recently explored
exciting class of carbon allotropes. This chapter focuses on the origin
and descriptions of molecularly defined NDs and their functionalization.
Properties of organohybrids built from such species are emphasized, in
particular, via the examination of their applications spanning important
scientific fields from synthetic chemistry to materials science. The
functionalization of diamondoids and ultradispersed detonation
nanodiamond has opened the way for the construction of a very large
diversity of nanohybrids. Nanoparticles of various origins are now
intensively examined for biological applications such as imaging,
diagnostic, or drug delivery. The synthetic applications of diamondoids
in catalysis are promising since the existing examples of decorating
phosphines with adamantantyl or diamantantyl fragments have given
spectacular results in terms of catalytic efficiency and scope.
