Abstract

A new species of porcellanid crab, Petrolisthes hispaniolensis is described. This new species belongs to ail American species assemblage, called here the P. lewisi-group, so far represented in the Caribbean Sea by P. jugosus (Streets, 1872) and P. magdalenensis Werding, 1978. The new species is clearly distinguished from the other two western Atlantic species by the shape of the carpus of the chelipeds, which bears some irregular, spine-tipped proximal teeth. The new species can also be distinguished by its coloration, as revealed by freshly collected specimens.
