Abstract

We investigated how gene flow is affected by physical barriers and geographical dis-tance in Burrowing Parrots, Cy-anoliseus patagonus, from Ar-gentina and Chile. We also exam-ined the interplay of heterogene-ous climatic landscapes in shap-ing the distribution of genetic variation in this species. For this, we carried out a large-scale sam-pling effort covering almost the entire range of the Burrowing Parrot in Argentina and Chile. Naturally molted feathers were collected non-invasively at the bottom of the cliffs with the col-onies and below roosts. During sampling, we also counted active nests at the colonies and, follow-ing methods previously devel-oped during our studies at El Cóndor, Patagonia, Argentina, we estimated population sizes.
