Ultrafine aerosol particles D < 100 nm with low solubility in the workplace atmosphere generally are present not as single free particles but composed as aggregates and agglomerates (U-fraction). It has been proposed that temporary these aerosols should be characterized by the particle concentration between D = 5 and D = 200 nm together with an analysis of the particle size and the mass concentration. For the example of welding fumes morphology and composition of this U-fraction is analysed. Measurements of welding fumes caused by hand are electric welding of structural steel and by inert gas welding of an alloy of aluminium demonstrate, that primary ultrafine particles mainly create chain shaped aggregates longer than 1 mu m. Therefore they are not registered as particles D < 200 nm. As a parameter which should be relevant from the view of occupational medicine and toxicology the number of all ultrafine primary particles in the working atmosphere including those which are bound in aggregates and agglomerates is estimated as 10(11) to 10(12) particles/m(3).
