Abstract

The quantitative detection of airborne bacteria can be divided in two steps. In a first step, the particles of the bioaerosols are sampled by a special device. In the second step, the collected microorganisms are detected by cultivation and quantified by counting of grown colonies. The efficiency of the whole detection depends on the device-specific physical sampling-efficiency and on the device-specific as well as species-specific biological sampling-efficiency. Consequently, results are only comparable on the basis of the same sampling-method (sampling and detection). Comparative measurements in a composting facility were done by using filtration (MD8) and impingement (AGI 30). Higher concentrations of bacteria were generated after sampling by filtration and detection by cultivation as well as by using a cultivation-independent method (DNA-colouring with DAPI). Obviously, the physical sampling-efficiency of the filtration device is higher than the impingement device under the selected test-conditions.
