An hypothesis on the evolution of the genera Erwinia and Pantoea was created based on the genome sequences and phylogeny. The comparative analyses indicated that there is a clear difference between the genomes of true pathogenic Erwinia species (E. amylovora, E. pyrifoliae and E. tasmaniensis) and the epiphyte E. billingiae Eb661, which has more in common with members of the genus Pantoea. The hypothesis was supported by the comparison of individual features from these genomes.
