Abstract: 

On the basis of Friedrich Nietzsche’s opposition be tween two fundamental principles of art – the imagistic and the non-imagistic – this essay investigates the question to what exte nt the discourse on the theory of the image is capable of reflecting on  music. While the theoretical spectrum of the iconic turn offers a fruitful reorientation for the aesthetic theory of music, music contribute s in a decisive way to the theoretical foundation of iconic thought. For this reason, music as a whole can be understood as a mode of iconic critique. Utilizing Theodor W. Adorno’s aporetic concept of the «imagel ess image», the final section of this essay proposes a conception of the imaginative quality of music as testimony.
