In the year 2000, the occurrence of the Skylark (Alauda arvensis) on the apron area of Frankfurt Airport was analysed by means of the territory-mapping method. A density of 8.5 territories per 10 hectares was established for the parallel runway system, and of 5.5 for the area of runway 18. Compared to the German average for inland grasslands, these values are exceptionally high. They can be explained by the presence of favourable habitat parameters on the apron area of Frankfurt Airport: dry sandy soil (the drainage of which is supported by technical measures), and short vegetation. A vegetation coverage of only 20-50% at some sites further benefits foraging and nesting. All these parameters are supported by the long-grass management.
