Biographical narratives are often considered the data basis of choice in (qualitative) educational research when studying educational processes. Working with such data, questions concerning the relation between education and language have to be addressed, particularly the shortcomings of biographical research on education which relies only on verbal explication. In a first instance, the article introduces central aspects of that biographical research which is founded on educational theory. Focusing then on the biographical interview from a socialization theoretical point of view, it can be stated that speaking is a display of socializational practice. This practice has a socio-structural and socio-cultural basis. Likewise, the subject matter of the interview, the "biography", follows an implicit concept which is constituted socio-culturally. Finally, considering the fact that biographical narratives are tied to speech, we have to ask for the indexicality of spoken statements and linked to that, the problem of understanding the other.. Overall, we suggest an outline which aims at tracing some of the constraints of current educational research grounded on biographical narratives.
