Cytokine receptors are specific binding proteins for mediators of the immune system. Usually binding of a cytokine to its specific transmembrane cytokine receptor initiates signal transduction and results in cell activation. However, some forms of cytokine receptors function as decoy receptors and modulate cytokine responsiveness. Soluble cytokine receptors may activate cells in a process known as trans-signaling, but more often, soluble cytokine receptors specifically bind and neutralize their respective cytokine. Soluble cytokine receptors have proven to be effective as highly specific ligand scavengers in anticytokine therapies. In this context the term cytokine is solely used for mediators of the immune system, and includes interleukins, interferons, and chemokines, but excludes hematopoietic growth factors (although there is a clear cross-talk between these different mediators).
