Abstract: 

This report is the result of the transnational project “Housework and caretaking: Strategies of reconciliation and conditions of employment in different family units. Gender, class and ethnic inequalities” promoted and coordinated by the Spanish Red Cross and financed by the European Commission1. The following organizations have participated as members of the investigation: the Institute for Feminist Research of the Complutense University (Spain), MAIZ (Austria), Hamburg University (Germany), The Bradford Youth Development Partnership (United Kingdom). The principal objective of this project has been to investigate from a comparative perspective the use of services based in the home as a means of reconciling family and work life. For this purpose a common methodology was established in order to analyze domestic and care work in two types of homes: those that externalize these services and those in which a member of the family unit works providing these services in other homes. The development of proposals and recommendations at a European level to improve the conditions of the sector which provides services to families as well as to improve the available means of reconciling work and family life for both kinds of homes has been priviledged throughout the research.
