Turtle Doves are among the most rapidly declining farmland bird species in Europe. Their habitat consists of forest edges, shrubs and hedgerows for nesting and meadows or agricultural land for foraging. The intensification of agriculture and related habitat losses have been proposed as the main threats for this species. In this study, the population decline and habitat preferences of the European Turtle Dove were investigated in the agriculturally strongly influenced region Wetterau (central Germany). 64 sites of I km2 and with breeding records of turtle doves in a survey 14 years ago were resurveyed again in June 2013. Turtle Doves were detected at 20 sites. It was noticeable that the areas of the central Wetterau seemed to be abandoned, while in the peripheral areas more territories were still occupied. To determine which habitat parameters had an influence on the occurrence of Turtle Doves, the land use of the 64 sites was recorded in detail and the land use of sites that were still occupied was compared with those of abandoned sites using GLMs and AICc ranking. A strong positive effect of woodland and grassland was evident. Dense deciduous forest and middle age mixed forest were the most important parameters for the breeding area while grassland and forest glades had a positive effect as a feeding habitat. The results can help to guide future species conservation attempts.
