Patients undergoing infertility treatment often satisfy their information needs by using the Internet. The objective of this study is to compile the main reasons for and the impact of different forms of Internet usage in case of infertility. A systematic review of literature was carried out including 19 distinct studies in English language published in peer-reviewed journals from 1999 to 2009 identified from PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, Sociological Abstracts and by using snowball sampling. According to the examined studies, the main reasons for the use of the Internet by infertile couples are the availability of a great amount of diverse information, the emotional, social and psychological support offered, and to seek self-help. The consequences are perceived improvements in knowledge, emotional state, relationships and self-efficacy. However, concerns about the quality of information and possible negative impacts are reported, too. Further research is needed concerning the effects of fertility patients’ internet use.
