Abstract

Women's Studies entered the University as the academic arm born out of a
concern that women's lived experiences and perspective are not lost.
Women's Studies has a political commitment to gender justice. 'Doing'
Women's Studies highlights the generation of knowledge. It points out
the underlying power equation in the process of creating knowledge and
in its propagation. It does help to develop a more complete picture of
social reality. The introduction of Women's Studies teaching study
programme is marked by a dilemma - the key question being should Women's
Studies remain as a separate discipline or be part of the mainstream
discipline. As Women's Studies is political in its content and is marked
by socio-political changes in the status of women, both these positions
are tenable. Ideally the Women's Studies perspective and theoretical
insight should transform the prevailing social science theoretical
paradigm. Nevertheless, given the prevailing marginal position fo women
and their powerlessness, these changes are unlikely to take place in the
near future.
