Abstract:
The study
on hand investigates the subjective perception of band atmosphere. It changes
for the better or the worse in dependency on several variables. To measure the
influence of leadership style and personality traits a new standardized
questionnaire (BKFB) was developed with four scales: positive band atmosphere
(BK), orientation on group success (TE), egocentric acceptance of
responsibility (EV), and orientation on task (AO). A survey was carried out
with two samples of Macedonian and German band members (n = 67 vs. n = 63) to
test potential dependency in cultural matters. On the whole, a band leader
reduces the positive band atmosphere, but heightens the subjective orientation
on group tasks and challenges at the same time. Whereas German musicians
clearly prefer a singer as band leader (who seems to be the right person for
heightened attention on emotional- interpersonal processes), Macedonian
musicians also acquired a taste for a democratic-community style of leadership.
Personality traits of band members have a modifying influence as well.
