Abstract

Contrary to the use of the artichoke as a vegetable plant, its utilisation as a medicinal plant is less common. As a basis for the production of phytopharma¬ceuticals, the green rosette leaves are used. In the leaves, polyphenolic compounds like caffeoylquinic acids and flavonoids are the main chemical compounds which make preparations of the artichoke helpful towards dyspeptic disorders. Due to the fact that temperate climate conditions like in Germany affect these vegetative parts of the artichoke positively, trials at the University of Giessen specified the effect of harvest date and nitrogen fertilization on yield and quality of the drug. The results of two years of field experiments have shown, that an early harvest date has a positive effect on the quality of the drug. Depending on harvest time and location, three to five times of leaf harvests per year are possible. Furthermore, low concentrations of nitrogen-fertilizer, as tested in a pot experiment, as well as a sufficient water supply during leaf formation of the plants, guarantee a high pharmaceutical quality.
