Abstract

The year 2017 was not only the 150th jubilee of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh; German Chemical Society), it also marked the 100th anniversary of the death of Adolf von Baeyer, who was the co-founder and later president of the GDCh's precursor, the Deutsche Chemische Gesellschaft zu Berlin. Apart from being a towering figure in chemistry, von Baeyer had a keen interest and great concern regarding the interplay of science and society, the future of chemistry, the university as the central institution of higher education, and science on the whole. These topics are just as timely today.
