Abstract:
Introduction The public debate about alleged border-violating sexuality education and cases of sexualized violence in educational institutions form a discursive background foil for educational work in which references to physicality and sexuality play an important role. In dealing with sexuality-related topics, the focus is often on prevention, which is intended to protect children and youths from boundary violations by for example professionals. (Sexual) pedagogical approaches that are supposed to actively promote the self-determination of the clientele are pushed into the background or can themselves sometimes give the impression of violating boundaries. Against this background, the phenomenon of insecurities on the part of pedagogical professionals, visible in sexual pedagogical training courses, can be discussed in terms of its specific and general meanings. Objectives This article explicates on the one hand the uncertainty of pedagogical professionals in their sex education work with clients and, on the other hand, in relation to the discourses taking place about it. How is insecurity expressed in this professional field? How is it articulated and negotiated? How can the observed insecurity be interpreted and what are the possible consequences for pedagogical professionals and sex educators? Methods Participant observations were carried out in the context of training courses for professionals in sexuality education. The observation protocols were then coded with the help of a deductive-inductive category system and analyzed in terms of content structure. Results Uncertainty plays a central role in sex education training and is expressed both implicitly and explicitly. In addition to a general insecurity regarding sexuality-related topics, this becomes apparent through linguistic insecurities. The insecurity is particularly relevant against the background of the prevention of sexualized border violations towards the clientele. Professionals are worried about behaving incorrectly - this concern not only affects their professional actions, but also their own identity. Conclusion When searching for the correct way to act, the need for clarification of sexuality becomes apparent. Uncertainty can be not just an obstacle in pedagogical work but rather also offer potential for reflection processes and the development of a professional attitude. Sex educators benefit from an awareness of potential or existing uncertainties when developing training events. In this way, sexuality education can contribute to the confidence of professionals.
