Abstract:
Foods for special medical purposes (FSMP) are intended for the dietary treatment of infants with special medical and nutritional needs. These products should only be used on medical advice and under medical supervision. Marketing for and over the counter sales of these products do not ensure appropriate medical guidance and supervision. The use of special nutrient solutions for the first postnatal days in healthy neonates to supplement breastfeeding and the use of special dietary products for infants with colic and/or constipation are not recommended due to a lack of clinical evidence. The use of infant formulas based on soya protein is only recommended for infants with galactosemia or hereditary lactose intolerance but not as first choice for infants with cow's milk protein allergy. Marketing of these formulas has to follow the general legal restrictions for infant formulas in order to protect and support breastfeeding. Homemade and industrially thickened formulas, so-called antireflux formulas, may be considered in selected cases of regurgitation. The use of energy and nutrient-enriched infant formulas may be considered for non-breastfed infants with disease-associated growth faltering or malnutrition.
