Abstract:
The commentary considers ways for historians to harness the momentum of the Anthropocene debate without taking the full detour of "terrestrial-planetary" thinking. Taking cues from the example of the nuclear semiotics of the 1980s, it argues that it is their very expertise reading the social production of meaning and the formation of collective identities over the short term that enables historians to get involved in debating the new epoch in the history of the earth. But contemporary history also holds a lesson on the risks of academic interventions that align too closely with the debates of the day. Becoming a historian in the Anthropocene means remaining a historian of the Anthropocene, as well.
