Abstract:
Soils are part of water and nutrient cycles and as such substantially contribute to vital ecosystems. The services soils provide can be described and quantified using natural soil functions. On the basis of digital soil maps, assessment methods are applied, and GIS-based soil function maps are cre-ated exemplarily for the city of Rostock and its surroundings. The derived soil function maps can identify particularly effi-cient and sensitive soils and are, thus, valuable in soil protection administration.
