Abstract

Key advances

A phase III trial showed that herbal therapy was noninferior to antibiotics for treatment of acute cystitis1. The applicability of the Acute Cystitis Symptom Score for diagnosing acute cystitis and measuring patient-reported outcome measures was assessed in two studies2,3. A mathematical model was used to improve empirical antibiotic therapy by specific identification of health-care-associated urinary tract infection, which also could help to reduce antimicrobial resistance4. An expert panel recommended a multidisciplinary approach to prostatitis5.

Many interesting studies on urological infection have been published in the past year including nonantibiotic therapy for acute cystitis, the utility of the Acute Cystitis Symptom Score, specific identification of health-care-associated urinary tract infection and a multidisciplinary approach to prostatitis.
