Abstract:
Formaldehyde is extraordinary effective for fixation of human bodies and routinely used in embalming solutions in anatomical dissection all over the world. High concentrations in vapours emitted from corpses embalmed with formaldehyde force the necessity to reduce the exposure for fulfilling Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL) worldwide. To monitor the emission more than fifty human corpses were examined at different dissection steps while skin was removed, subcutaneous fat and muscles were dissected, and during opening of the thorax and of the abdominal wall. Best results were achieved by a combination of post-embalming treatment with InfuTrace (TM) applied to 3% fixed corpses and a modified ventilation system with three long throw nozzles fixed over the length of the dissection table. The data generated clearly underline the necessity for a combination of different methods - chemical destruction combined with a modified ventilation system - to reduce formaldehyde loads in a dissection course when using conventionally formaldehyde fixed corpses.
