Abstract:
This article describes the results of an analysis of criminal records dealing with criminal procedures due to offences of sexual abuse against minors in the Catholic Church and in other institutions, e.g. schools. The analysis revealed that the criminal charges were very severe in some cases. In many cases the persons charged were not only accused of having committed one assault but several offences. Several affected persons suffered multiple instances of sexual abuse. Offences in the Catholic Church and in the other institutions show many similarities but there are also differences. Out of the criminal procedures concerning the Catholic Church, only less than one third resulted in aconviction. The reason for this was mainly the fact that many of the procedures had to be discontinued due to expiry of the period of limitation.
