Abstract:
Investigation of the ossification of the thyroid cartilage is of interest not only for fundamental anatomical and morphological research but also for forensic considerations. The aim of this study was to investigate sex and age polymorphisms using microcomputed tomography (CT). A CT imaging was performed on 53larynxes collected at autopsy. Due to its high spatial resolution and non-destructive nature CT is suitable for the acquisition of three-dimensional volume datasets. These are required for the quantitative analysis of bone structure parameters and the visualization of differences and changes in the trabecular bone structure. Parameters such as bone density, bone volume and total volume as well as ascore developed ad hoc for the type of ossification were determined. As aresult, significant age and sex polymorphisms could be demonstrated. Thyroid cartilages from males and older individuals were significantly more trabecular, more ossified and had alarger bone and tissue volume compared to thyroid cartilages from younger and female individuals. Thus, abenefit for forensic medicine could be shown with the thyroid cartilage serving as apredictor for the sex and age of an unknown corpse.
