Abstract:
Husn al-takhallus was the term that medieval Arabic literary critics used for the rhetorical device by which Arabic poets connected the different themes of the polythematic qasidah. In early times poets often dispensed with a transition. In the 'Abbasid period however, the poets bestowed more effort on the shaping of husn al-takhallus. They also had to adjust it to changes in the nasib, the opening part of the qasidah. The article shows how two important poets of the Ayyubid era, Ibn al-Nabih and Ibn Sana. al-Mulk, met the challenge, either by developing further the devices of earlier poets, or by creating totally new transitions.
