Abstract

An adequate and appropriate nutrition of children is a challenge under life in poverty conditions. Expert panels under the guidance of the World Health Organization (WHO) have prepared guidelines and recommendations for feeding infants and young children based on many studies. The guidelines address the needs of healthy newborns, infants and young children as well as groups with special needs, such as small for gestational age newborns, children with severe malnutrition and children of mothers infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

A better understanding of the conditions in countries poor in resources is important to promote political processes, which facilitate a life without malnutrition for children living under these conditions.

Practice-relevant recommendations and guidelines for feeding healthy and sick children under poverty conditions are presented.

With respect to interactions between nutrition, immune defense, infections and healing, which have so far only been partially understood, the consideration of adequate nutrition is a prerequisite for successful child care and case management.
