Abstract

In this paper, real and ideal approaches of informed consent in language therapy research with children are examined. Ethical standards have not been established in speech language therapy research so far. In the context of turning logopedics into an academic discipline in Germany, this study is intended to support the development of ethical principles in the new field.

We present and analyse interviews with 3 SLT experts who are engaged in therapeutic research. The results suggest that no uniform approach for gaining informed consent of parents and/or children exists. Various methods and requirements are identified, whereby the experts focus on organising the recruitment of subjects. Building up from the results, we present a proposal for ethical standards that hopefully will enrich the discussion.
