Abstract:
This paper examines cassava and "gari'' markets in southern and central Benin. The study highlights the performance of the aforesaid markets as well as the constraints related to their development. The investigations were conducted with 52 traders in southern and central Benin. From the field observations and data analysis, it came out on one hand that cassava and "gari'' markets in southern and central Benin are run mainly by women with a low level of formal education. On the other hand, these markets are concentrated and contestable. The first three major constraints limiting the development of the observed markets are the difficulties of supply, the lack of financial resources or means, and sales issues. As policy implication, traders and especially retailers should be gathered in commercialization groups or cooperatives. Policy interventions should also be aimed at improving supply conditions by facilitating the traders' access to production or processing points.
