Abstract
The article presents theory and research on the concept of "the good citizen". The operationalisation within the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS 2009) is criticized as presenting a rather narrow concept of the good citizen. On the basis of political theory, a new instrument distinguishing six different ideas of the good citizen is suggested. In the course of an empirical study with students in Germany, the new instrument has been tested. A model representing four of the six good citizen concepts could be statistically confirmed. Further, the validity of the distinction between different ideas of the good citizen is shown by tracing back variations within the preferred concepts to characteristics of the students, such as their migration status and their perception of social justice within the school system. As expected, immigrant students and students that perceive the school system as unjust tend to show an idea of the citizen as a law obeying private subject.
