The biogas production process leads to the unwanted emissions of greenhouse gases. These emissions can either be prevented by technical solutions or reduced through the use of additives to the biogas process.
Abstract:
This study evaluates the effect of the continuous application of sodium bicarbonate as a buffering substance on both the development of gaseous emissions and gas composition of the digest production residues.
Laboratory tests were performed with three digesters according to VDI-4630 (2006). All digesters were continuously fed, in two of the digesters sodium bicarbonate was added while the third digester was used as a control without addition of sodium bicarbonate.
The experiment was divided into five phases which are: preparation, first degassing, stabilization, the examination phase to continuously raise the volumetric loading and continuous buffering, and second degassing phase including the odourtest. The main focus was the second degassing phase from day 154 to 182. Here the residual biogas potential and gas quality of the digest residues were measured and evaluated.
The results showed that compared to the control, the application of sodium bicarbonate at the optimal level reduced residual biogas potential as well as lowering ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations. In addition to the positive effects of sodium bicarbonate as a buffering substance, the optimal application also reduced the emission potential of trace gases of the digest residues.
These results support the application of appropriate levels of sodium bicarbonate to reduce the emission potential of digest residues from biogas production.
