Abstract:
Neuro-ophthalmologic testing is necessary in the diagnostic work-up of impaired vision, ocular motility disorders, neurologic and endocrinologic disorders and as part of pediatric screening. Elementary diagnostics implies differentiated testing of both lid and pupillary functions, ocular alignment and motility, gaze motility, visual acuity, visual field, color vision, binocular vision as well as ophthalmoscopy. These examinations yield information on important visual functions, central processing, oculomotor efference, and functions of the intra- and extraocular muscles. The article describes elementary methods which can be used in pediatric practice and allow one to discriminate harmless disorders from such requiring acute diagnostic and therapeutic management.
