At the end of 2008, after multi-years construction works and several setback due to earthquake and flood events, test storage and first operation test of the facility had been successfully carried out. The pilot plant will assure future water supply for 80 000 people and serves as an initial of multiplication measures for similar situation worldwide. Within this German-Indonesian cooperation, seven institutes from the University of Karlsruhe and University of Giessen as well as several industrial partners were involved. Their specific field of contributions within this joint project are presented as separate articles in this special issue.
