Abstract: 
In retrospective, the 1960s and '70s prove to have been a phase in West-German educational history characterized by an intense both public and professional discourse on educational reform. It was also a phase during which various changes were initiated, aiming above all at a both quantitative and qualitative expansion of the educational system which, at the same time, was to effect a decrease in existing educational inequalities. However, the expansion of the educational system was followed by only a marginal reduction of educational inequalities, the causes for which are discussed in the final part of the study.
