Abstract
We analyzed the relation between student uniforms and student characteristics at the secondary school level. The sample consisted of 84 students from four classes with a mandatory uniform policy and 87 students from four classes without a uniform policy. Marked differences could mainly be observed at upper grade levels, where the uniform is worn for a longer time: At these grade level, students wearing uniforms compared to those not wearing uniforms reported a better classroom climate, a higher learning goal orientation, higher classroom attention and a lower importance of clothes. Analogous differences at grade level 5 (where students wore their uniform since three month) could not be found. We discuss important aspects in implementing uniform policies at schools.
