Abstract:
We report on a design study of a high-current electron gun producing a ribbon-shaped electron beam. The gun is designed for the energy range of 10-3500 eV. It has a perveance of 3.9 x 10(-6) AV(-3/2). The gun consists of nine separate electrodes. In the interaction region a parallel electron beam with a cross section of about 2 mm x 60 mm and a current density as high as 1.0 A/cm(2) is provided. The electron gun offers features especially desirable in electron-ion collision experiments. It can operate in different modes allowing for the variation of the electron current with or without a potential trap in the interaction region at any desired energy within the design range.
