Abstract
Recent improvements in the performance of PbWO4, a high-density inorganic scintillator, offer the possibility to design very compact, large-acceptance electromagnetic calorimeters with excellent timing and good energy resolution, applicable also for photon energies below 1 Gev. Such a detection system is planned to be built for the internal magnetic spectrometer ANKE (Apparatus for Studies of Nucleon and Kaon Ejectiles) at the Cooler Synchrotron (Cosy) Julich. The limited space and stray magnetic fields of ANKE place severe boundary conditions, which have to be taken into account for detector layout and the choice of photo sensors.
