Abstract
The performance and application of PbWO4 in electromagnetic calorimetry at energies below 1 GeV has been extensively investigated in parallel with the improvement of the quality of large size crystals. The lineshape, energy and time response to monoenergetic electrons and photons between 50 and 850 MeV energy was measured using detector arrays of up to 5 x 5 crystals read-out with fast photomultipliers. First results of Tb- and Mo-doped PbWO4-crystals optimized for very low energy photon detection are presented. As a first application, the proposed concept for a compact photon spectrometer to be implemented into the ANKE magnetic spectrometer at COSY (FZ Julich) is illustrated. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
