Abstract
Protein Z is a vitamin K-dependent protein, synthesized by the liver and shows intense homology to other vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors. Of the physiologic function of protein Z it is only known, that thrombin binds to phospholipid surfaces in the presence of protein Z, but not in its absence. Deficiency states of protein Z con cause bleeding tendency, during consumption coagulopathy diminution of protein Z is observed. High concentrations of protein Z were found in arteriosclerotic plaques.
