Abstract:
The filamentous sporophytes of Derbesia spp. typically are heterokaryotic. In the sporangia of Derbesia and Pedobesia pairing of nuclei, karyogamy and meiosis take place before the formation of zoospores. In both genera ploidy levels corresponding to diploid nuclei have been observed only in young sporangia. By epifluorescence microscopy, paired nuclei may be observed in young sporangia. This new observation confirms the results obtained by microphotometry and microfluorometry. The life cycle proposed recently for a strain of Derbesia tenuissima by S.H. Lee, T Motomura & T. Ichimura [Phycologia 37: 330-333 (1998)] is probably not characteristic for most species of the genus Derbesia.
