Abstract:
In monomorphic reptiles the most important three diagnostic imaging methods, radiology, ultrasonography, endoscopy are able to verify the gender in different ways. Radiology permits the determination of gender if calcified eggs can be demonstrated. In rare cases testes, vitellogenic follicles and calcificated hemipenis can be seen, Sonography allows to display vitellogenic follicles and eggs (wether calcified or not). Testes can be shown seldom and previtellogenic follicles only in snakes and lizards. Juvenile gonads can not be demonstrated. Endoscopy is the only method to determine the sex: of reptiles independend from species, size, age and reproductive status. Juvenile reptiles can also be sexed in a reliable way. The endoscopic examination is invasive and therefore requires anesthesia.
