Abstract

A multimedia program was developed, which replaces the traditional, linear way of teaching (text book) by a nonlinear system. Nonlinear systems allow the direct use of information in a free sequence. A problem of such systems is the danger that the reader gets lost in details. Therefore, a program was constructed which tries to combine the advantages of linear and nonlinear teaching systems.
The program is organized in several levels. These are:
Choice of chapters -->Table of contents of one chapter -->Summary -->Text -->Pictures -->Animations, simulations and films.
The program can be used in a linear and in a nonlinear fashion. In the linear mode, the user moves through action words to the different levers of the program. He can read either only on the level of the summaries or he can move to detailed information (text, pictures, simulations). in the nonlinear mode the user jumps through a menu bar to selected pictures, simulations or a searched term. By this way more than 3500 screen pages are integrated to a teaching/learning program for veterinary physiology. The program is written in Toolbook, it can be used on every PC under Windows 95.
