Anesthesia of tropical boids (Boa constrictor) - influences of the ambient temperature?

Abstract
15 tropical boids (Boa constrictor) were anesthetised at room temperature (22 degrees C) with Tiletamine/tolazepam at 25 mg/kg metabolic body weight i. m. Hemodynamic and respiratory function were assessed and the data were compared to values obtained by STIRL (1997) at 30 degrees C, the snakes preferred body temperature. The greatest influence of the temperature exists on the duration of the stages of anesthesia. The reduction in ambient temperature by 8 degrees C almost doubles the total anesthesia time, but also extends the recovery phase to 222 %. No negative influences on hemodynamic, respiration, blood gasses nov acid-base status were noticed. The article concludes, that Tiletamine/Zolazepam can be used safely at 22 degrees C, just the recovery should take place at 30 degrees C.
