Abstract

The first communication dealt with the efficiency and suitability of the Petrifilm(TM) method and the detailed description of the method as well. Regression analysis was used to compare the results. The data of food of animal origin were presented. The question now was to investigate if the Petrifilm(TM) method can also be applied to food of vegetable and mixed origin.

To answer this question, we describe in the second communication the results of investigations of food of vegetable origin (paprika, green cabbage, raw salad; n = 100) and mixed origin (baby food, pizza, delicacies salad; n = 150).

Correlation coefficients of 0,92 (paprika) up to 0,78 (green cabbage) were obtained for the aerobic mesophilic colony count. The linear relationship between the Petrifilm(TM) method and the reference method indicates a high suitability for the use of Petrifilms. The correlation coefficients for the coliform were lower - 0,89 for raw salad, 0,88 for green cabbage and 0,63 for pizza.

The results demonstrated that Petrifilm(TM) method is a convenient method for the enumeration of different microorganisms in food of vegetable and mixed origin as well.
