Microbiological investigations require a lot of labour, materials and time. Various working groups endeavoured to develop alternative microbiological investigation methods which could be used for routine investigations. In own investigations the recovery of microorganisms in foods of animal origin was compared using conventional pour plating techniques and Petrifilm (TM) methods. Comparisons for aerobic mesophilic colony count, coliform count and E. coli count were done for 503 foods, including 353 foods of animal origin (ground beef, poultry, raw milk, liquid whole egg, tuna and 150 foods with vegetables components (baby food, delicacies salads, pizza: cf. 2(nd) communication). Regression analysis was used to compare Petrifilm (TM) with reference methods. Concerning the aerobic colony count there was a correlation coefficient of < 0,97, indicating a strong linear relationship between both methods. Correlation coefficients of 0,88 up to 0,96 were obtained for coliform counts, 0,77 up to 0,98 for E. coli count. The Petrifilm (TM) for the enumeration of the aerobic flora has been shown to be a suitable and convenient method. Although the correlation coefficients for the coliform and E. coli count were lower than for aerobic count, the difference was not enormous. Petrifilm (TM) is an easy alternative to traditional microbial enumeration methods.
