Abstract
The present experiments aimed to improve breeding methodology by using different routes for the development of pure lines. Induction media with different nitrogen sources were tested to improve the efficiency of microspore culture technique in linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.). In comparison to the anther culture method applied simultaneously the callus production rate remained lower. But shoot differentiation from calli originating from microspore culture was more efficient. By comparing doubled haploid (DH) lines and pedigree lines it could be demonstrated that the progenies of three crosses which had been developed by pedigree selection showed a higher performance than simultaneously developed DH lines. In three other crosses pedigree lines (F-5 generation) and DH lines were compared under field conditions. Concerning seed yield, disease resistance and 1000-grain-weight, the pedigree lines exhibited a superior performance as compared to the DH lines. In the cross 'Kubanskii x DH 57/1' DH lines could be identified that achieved higher C18:3 contents than their parents. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
