Abstract
An overview on the occurrence of resonances in electron-ion collisions is given. Different experimental approaches to investigate such resonances are discussed. These include fast ion-atom collisions, plasma and ion-trap observations, and, of course, direct measurements using colliding-beam techniques. Considerable progress has been achieved in studies on dielectronic recombination and ionization of highly charged ions by employing heavy-ion storage rings. Some of the latest results in this area are discussed with special emphasis on recombination rate enhancement effects observed under conditions of electron cooling of stored ions and under the presence of external electric fields in the electron-ion collision region, respectively.
